Charleston's first "Walk Off Diabetes" takes place today in Hampton Park as part of an effort to bring attention to a disease that strikes many South Carolinians, especially in the black community.
Organizers are asking attendees to visit and walk the park 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., where educational programs, health tips and diabetes screening will be available to all at no cost.
About one in eight blacks in South Carolina has diabetes, the 16th-highest rate in the country, according to state health statistics.
All ages are welcome, and there is no fee to take part.
Some of the free screenings will include for blood pressure, glucose and body mass index, all key indicators of health as it relates to diabetes.
